RAAF Contingent Ubon consisted of No79 (F) Squadron, initially drawn entirely from No77 (F) Squadron plus a self-accounting Base Squadron, initially staffed from Butterworth units but quickly re-staffed from units in Australia. The Ubon US air base was a huge sprawling collection of huts and a runway. The RAAF base was a small pimple base on the outer perimeter. Every ten to twenty minutes a flight of seven F-4C Phantom jets would take off loaded with bombs headed for Hanoi or other targets.
